Comprehensive healthcare delivery system in the Memphis metropolitan area, including eight hospitals, several rural clinics, and a home health agency. Affiliated with The United Methodist Church.
Methodist Healthcare is a healthcare delivery system based in Memphis, Tennessee, serving the communities of Eastern Arkansas, West Tennessee and North Mississippi. Methodist Healthcare operates seven hospitals, several rural health clinics and a home health agency with approximately 10,249 Associates and 1,805 licensed beds.
Mission Statement
Methodist Healthcare, in partnership with its medical staffs, will be the leader in providing high quality, cost-effective healthcare to benefit the communities we serve. Services will be provided in a manner which supports the health ministries and Social Principles of the United Methodist Church.
History
Methodist Hospital was founded in 1918 from the dream of John M. Sherard, a successful, idealistic North Mississippi farmer and dedicated United Methodist layperson. Sherard first envisioned a Methodist Hospital of Memphis in 1889 and was instrumental in organizing the first meeting of the Board of Trustees on February 7, 1911. Since then, Methodist Healthcare has grown to become the country's second largest private, not-for-profit hospital. It provides healthcare services to persons of all denominations who reside in the Mid-South.
Throughout the history of Methodist Healthcare, the relationship with the Memphis, Mississippi and North Arkansas Conferences of the United Methodist Church has enabled the hospital to continue to fulfill its original Christian mission of healing. This mission is strengthened by the church-appointed Board of Trustees, whose authority includes the appointing of the Methodist Healthcare Board of Directors, making amendments to the Methodist Healthcare charter and bylaws and approving the sale or purchase of significant portions of Methodist Healthcare assets.
